Au revoir Denis ! / Farewell Denis !

Mardi 26 juillet, Denis Dubourdieu a quitté cette Terre qu'il a chérie, travaillée, respectée, écrin de vigne et berceau des vins qu'il s'est attaché à rendre meilleurs.

Au-delà de son incroyable contribution à la production de vins d'exception d'ici ou d'ailleurs, à sa constante recherche de la révélation du Terroir, à ses travaux scientifiques qu'il a su rendre accessibles à des générations de vignerons, oenologues et amateurs, je garderai le souvenir de nos échanges animés et enthousiastes.

Te souviens-tu Valérie (Lavigne) de ce soir à Auxerre, où, rejetés en raison de votre arrivée tardive par le restaurant initialement choisi, nous avons fini par atterrir dans un restaurant indien ? Il a voulu, bien sûr, choisir un vin indien totalement improbable, et nous avons ri de son application à le consommer, alors que nous nous étions arrêtées, franchement dubitatives, à sa dégustation ? Il nous a parlé alors du respect dû aux hommes qui avaient contribué à le faire. Je pense aussi à ces moments où, après avoir arpenté les parcelles, débattu de l'évolution du processus de vinification le plus adapté au lieu et à l'instant, sélectionné et travaillé de longues heures à l'assemblage des meilleurs cuvées.... nous nous retrouvions autour d'un casse-croûte sans façon, à bord d'une péniche d'ailleurs coulée depuis, à échanger les dernières nouvelles, débattre de l'actualité, se recommander le dernier livre à ne surtout pas manquer....

Car au-delà du métier du vin, Denis était curieux de tout, et cette quête spirituelle allait bien au-delà du métier du vin. Echange, partage, simplicité, humanité. Quelle ironie que ce soit justement une mauvaise tumeur au cerveau qui ait eu raison de cet homme d'esprit !

Merci Denis, pour avoir contribué à ma vision de ce beau métier du vin, orienté l'éducation de mon palais, pour avoir répondu présent, toujours, à Chablis, en Provence comme ailleurs, chaque fois que j'ai fait appel à toi, pour m'avoir soutenue dans les temps difficiles.

Aujourd'hui, 29 juillet 2016, on porte en Terre Denis Dubourdieu, grand homme du vin et grand Monsieur tout court.

Farewell Denis !

Last Tuesday, 26th of July, Denis Dubourdieu left this Earth which he most cherished, worked, respected, shrine of vines and cradle of the wines. Beyond his incredible contribution to the productionof wines of exception, his ongoing research of the Terroir's best expression, his scientific works which he made accessible to generations of vinegrowers, wine makers and lovers, I will remember our lively and enthousiastic exchange.

Do you remember Valérie (Lavigne), this evening in Auxerre, when rejected by the restaurant booked due to your late arrival, we finally ended up in an unknown Indian restaurant ? He of course insisted on choosing what happened to be a very weird Indian wine, and we made fun of his insistance on drinking it when we both had stopped with much scepticism after the first sip ? He simply spoke about the respect due to the men behind the wine. I also remember those moments when, after having spent long hours visiting parcels, arguing about the winemaking process best adapted to the area and grapes, working on blending the top notch cuvées of the vintage... we ended the day discussing over a snack on a houseboat (sunk by now) of the latest news, international issues, and exchanging books that one shouldn't miss...

Because Denis was curious about everything, and this spiritual quest led far beyond the wine business. Dialogue, shared knowledge, simplicity, humanity. What a sad irony that this man of spirits died of brain cancer !

Thank you Denis, for helping me in developing my personal vision of this beautiful world of wine , upgrading my tasting skills, for having answered "present" at each of my requests in Chablis, Provence as elsewhere, for supporting me in difficult times.

Today, Friday the 29th of July 2016, Denis Dubourdieu, a grat Man of Wine, and a Man of first order, will be buried.
